When I returned to Oxford in 2023 I was armed with my iPhone and off I went. These three come from that time and are from South Park and Christchurch Meadow (the red one). These stem (no pun intended) from my first tenure in Oxford from 2008-2009. The first one is near what is now Oxford Parkway station. The others range from Botley to the Thames Path from what I can remember.

This black walnut tree at Oxford Brookes on Headington Hill has an amazing canopy, perfect for sitting under in the summer. Although the black walnut tree has a bad reputation, being quite toxic and killing off other species around it, its brain shaped walnuts are a tasty treat.

This tree is on a path I walk 4-5 times a week. It is open, vast and inviting. It beckons me in to go sit under it, to read in its shade, or bury some treasure for future generations to find. And one of these days I might just do one of those things. But I always enjoy the view.

The old Sequoia outside the natural history museum is an Oxford landmark. It was a mere shrub when planted, but is now taller than the museum! Children love following the dinosaur footprints at it's base.

When walking along the Ridgeway, I could see this tree in the distance. For some reason, perhaps due to the thickness of the foliage, it seemed more visible than other structures around it at the same distance.

Sometimes trees can be fun. Curiouser and curiouser - can you spot the Chesire cat in this tree in the Botanic Gardens? Longevity is Lewis Carroll's middle name, Alice in Wonderland has stuck with us for a long time in Oxford.

I often pass this tree on the way to work. It’s a magnificent specimen. I love the fact that a bench has been placed around its trunk, that it’s in the hospital grounds and close to a Nursery. Somehow its huge canopy speaks of care and protection…wholly appropriate given its location!

This apple tree is in our garden - a happy surprise when we moved into this house. The white and pink blossom reminds me of the beauty and joy of Spring and the scattered petals look like confetti at a celebration as they fall around the garden. In Summer we get to enjoy many delicious apples, apple crumbles, apple cakes, and apple pies which we also get to share with friends and loved ones.

In September 2006 this was the location of the International Sheep Dog Trial and these two trees were used as a gate the sheep had to be driven through. We enjoyed the trees alongside the skill of the dogs.

A bank holiday trip to the New Forest to get away from Abingdon‘s rain! First a stop at the coast, then a trip inland towards Brockenhurst. This forest has lovely level walking. We came across these fallen trees which I thought looked like a pair of dinosaurs. Evidence in the photos!

It was planted in 2024 in memory of my late wife, Carol Clements, who was an enthusiastic supporter of Raleigh Park and one of the founder members of the Friends of the park. Our house backs onto the park and, as a botanist, she spent many happy hours in the park.

Our last visit to Port Meadow was when it was flooded. Back to the car was through a puddle which was so deep and flooded our wellies!

These trees are starting their lives, but they look so weathered already

Plus, you can’t visit Port Meadow without walking through the herd of cows.

This old Oak is now standing deadwood. It is amazing that even now it is still such a striking landmark, looking over the dreaming spires of Oxford, whilst providing such a rich source of food and shelter for all sorts of wildlife.

The way that the willow trees overhang the canal that runs through Oxford is particularly stunning on a still day, when the reflection shows so clearly on the water. This is a particularly fine example near Wolvercote.

This young oak tree is a distinctive landmark in the farmers fields just north of Oxford, that I pass often when running towards Kidlington or Islip. It seems to stand as a sentinel over the crops, and is well used as a perch by crows and red kites.
